Polly's Pointers Cut Cost of Sewing Shift Dresses By POLLY CRAMER DEAR POLLY When making shifts I found that the cost of the zipper often amounted from a third to a half of the cost of the dress. Now I use a continuous bound placket such as the ones in tong sleeved shirts. In addition to cutting the cost, this is comfortable. To make it, slash the center back of the shift as far down as necessary for it to slip on easily.

Cut a strip of fabric inches wide and twice the length of the slash, fold into fourths and pin onto the slash. Sew a hook and eye at the top of the placket. Those large scraps of fabric left from sewing can be used to dress up your television trays. Cut a piece the size of the tray. Decorate with appliques, rickrack or other trimmings, hem and you have some pretty place mats.
