"Troy grabbed it at the 5-yard line, stepped over one kid and fell over another," Spartan assistant coach Jerry Doyle said. "He kind of fell into the end zone." Not bad for Greene's first varsity football game. But according to Solon head coach Ed Hansen, Donohue led the Spartans to victory.

"He called most of the plays," Hansen said. "He did Just a super job. I think he's one of the best quarterbacks in the state." Williamsburg opened the scoring when Bob Selby threw an 11-yard pass to Doug Wallace during the first quarter. Solon fullback Rich Cooling came back with a 15-yard touchdown run, but Williamsburg running back Stuart -Stahl scored another touchdown for the Raiders. Cooling came back to score his second touchdown for Solon before halftime to give the Spartans a 16-14 lead.

Neither team scored during the third quarter, but Stahl plunged across the goal line early in the fourth quarter, giving Williamsburg a four-point lead. The Spartans got the ball at -midfield with 1:05 left, Doyle said. The Raider defense sacked Donohue once, but a pass interference penalty against Williamsburg gave the Spartans a first-and-10 on the 30-yard line. Donohue then threw the touchdown pass with 38 seconds left The game didn't resemble last year's contest, which Solon won 21-0. Hansen said the difference was "last year we had big people on the line.

This year no one weighs more than 165 (pounds)." Williamsburg coach Bob Larsen said his offense has improved from last season. Stahl gained 156 yards in 31 carries for the Raiders, while Selby completed seven passes of 11 attempts for 149 yards, Larsen said. West Branch 32, Tipton 7 TIPTON West Branch football coach Butch Pedersen, who had never given a halftime speech before, must have said something special at intermission Friday night as his Bears scored on their first two possessions of the second half and coasted by Tipton, 32-7, in the high school football opener for both teams. Leading 14-7 at half, West Branch marched 69 yards on their first possession of the third quarter, with wide receiver Mark Heid grabbing quarterback Marv Cook's 15-yard pass for the touchdown. Cook then kicked a 30-yard field goal on the Bear's second possession of the half.

"Really, I didn't say anything special at half," said Pedersen, who Is a rookie head coach after eight years as West Branch's defensive coordinator. "The thing that happened to-, night is they took away our outside game and we went inside on them," he said. And, while West Branch's offense was rolling to the tune of 331 total yards, the Bears' defense was shutting down Tipton. West Branch surrendered only 16 yards rushing for the game, and, despite giving up 148 yards passing, had four interceptions. Mid-Prairie 7.
