All were released on their own recognizance and have preliminary hearings May 9. Man gets 2 years in jail on theft charge An area man was sentenced Thursday in Johnson County District Court to two years in prison on a theft charge. The man, John F. Clarke, 22, address unknown, pleaded guilty to third-degree theft, records said. The charge stemmed from five bad checks totaling $200.

Clarke will serve the sentence at the same time he serves a Linn County sentence for forgery. He will receive 15 days credit for time already served. Clear Low: 30s Spencer 5342 Sioux City 5041 DEATHS Walter McFarland, 72 Walter (Manny) McFarland, 72, of Ainsworth died Friday at Mercy Hospital. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stacey-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction.

Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been esUolished. Mr.

McFarland was bora Sept. 21, 1918, in Ainsworth, a son of Robert E. and Katherine Klock-engay McFarland. He married Kathryn (Kate) Morrett Oct. 10, 1954, in Muscatine.

He was of the Presbyterian faith. He was a veteran of World War II, a technical sergeant for the 302nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, serving two years in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Ainsworth American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a personnel manager for Rath Packing Company for 22 years and was most recently a school bus driver for the Highland School District. He is survived by his wife; one son, Ricky of Denver, one daughter, Kelly (Mrs.

Curt) Jensen of Washington; three grandchildren; three brothers, Richard, Bill and Jack, all of Ainsworth; four sisters, Irene (Mrs. Blaine) Hawkins of Burlington, Phyllis (Mrs. Robert) Lopshire of Ainsworth, Deloris (Mrs. Ben) Coleman of Alabama and Wilma (Mrs. Dale) Humphreys of Minot, N.D.

COURTS Trial begins Monday in kidnapping case The first-degree kidnapping trial of a Cedar Rapids man who also faces two Johnson County charges is schedued to begin Monday in Linn County.

The man, Patrick S. McAmis, 27, is accused of kidnapping a 21-year-old Cedar Rapids woman Oct. 20, driving her to Johnson County and sexually assaulting and stabbing her. The sentence for kidnapping is life in prison. McAmis is charged with attempted murder and second-degree sexual abuse in Johnson County.

Trial here is scheduled for May 20. Area man arrested on weapons charges A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Thursday on weapons charges, Johnson County District Court records said. The man, Charles D. Cook, 21, is charged with going armed with intent, assault causing injury and carrying weapons. He's accused of entering an apartment at 401 Fourth Ave.

April 12 and assaulting a women by hitting her in the face, pulling her hair, and threatening to kill her and another person. Records said he carried a small, semi-automatic handgun. Cook was released on $8,000 bond. Debate team scores Several University of Iowa debate team members won awards during the National Debate Tournament recently in San Antonio, Texas. The team of Nathan Coco and Charles Smith took third place, and the team of Omar Guevara and Randal Sandler finished in the "sweet 16." Three Iowa speakers finished with "Top 10 Speakers" awards Guevara at fifth, Smith at seventh and Coco at ninth.

Coco and Smith defeated teams from Dartmouth, Emory, Georgetown and Harvard in preliminary rounds. Guevara and Sandler beat teams from Emory, James Madison, George Mason and Northwestern. Both teams later lost to Michigan. The teams are coached by.
