OFFICIAL PUBLICATION 4D Iowa City Press-Citizen SPORTS TUESDAY, May 12, 1992 Riley: Bulls should stop whining about officiating inside, outrebounding Chicago by a margin of 174-139 so far or by almost 10 per game. The play has been rough. Michael Jordan is averaging 29.7 points per game, but the magic of Air Jordan is missing. "They're playing good, compact defense," Jordan said. "They haven't given me room to take over.

So don't look for me to score 56 or 63 points in any game against the New York Knicks." The fact that he's whining and whimpering about the officiating is an insult to how hard our guys are playing and" how much our guys want to win." The Knicks have been called for an even 100 personal fouls in the first four games 17 more than the Bulls. Chicago has been whistled for six technical fouls; the Knicks, two. Jackson has received three of the Bulls' six. The Knicks have dominated "I was also against the board play. I think the league has to take a look at this type of play." Riley reacted vehemently Monday to Jackson's words when the Knicks gathered for the trip to Chicago and Game 5 tonight.

"I think what he's doing is insulting us, basically," Riley said. "I was part of six championship teams. I've been in the finals 13 times. And I know what a championship demeanor is about. has been annoyed with the officials since Game 1.

And he carped loudly about them after Game 4 Sunday, which the Knicks won 93-86 to knot the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals series at two games apiece. "They were pushing our dribblers with two hands that's football," said Jackson, who was ejected from the game with 4.4 seconds left in the third quarter and his team ahead by two points. By Mike Delnagro Gannett News Service NEW YORK Pat Riley is fed up with the NBA champ Chicago Bulls' complaining about the officiating. The New York Knicks coach termed the constant fault-finding "insulting." And he accused the Bulls of "whining and whimpering." 1992 By Trudy Tynan Associated Press SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Connie Hawkins, who once was shunned by the game in a cheating scandal, swooped into the Basketball Hall of Fame with the same grace that made him a legend on the Brooklyn playgrounds. "If anyone would have told me I would have had the kind of life I had, I would have laughed at them," Hawkins said at Monday's ceremony. "Imagine doing what you love to do and being paid to do it. Few people get to do that." Also installed in the game's centennial year were Bob Lanier, Soviet star Sergei Belov and the Hall of Fame's first two women players Nera White and Lucia Harris Stewart.

Stewart's coach at Delta State, Margaret Wade, was one of first three women enshrined in 1985, Lopresti from 1D The Knicks were not supposed to be a threat, but rather the soup and salad for the Bulls' four-course meal in the playoffs. There has, however, been a delay in the buffet line. One thing we have learned in the past week is the wisdom of that beloved basketball seer, Bill Laimbeer. After New York finished off his Detroit Pistons in the first round, Laimbeer loudly proclaimed that should the officials allow the Knicks the physical leeway against the Bulls they had against the Pistons they might get Chicago in a headlock. Figuratively speaking, of course.

And here we are. The Bulls have been hand-checked at nearly every drive, and had a body put to them on nearly every rebound. "I think the league likes this kind of stuff," Coach Phil Jackson grumbled. "We have to accept that and play through it." "They're doing the same thing to us," countered McDaniel, who has had on-court words for his assigned Bull, Scottie Pippen. "Every play, he runs to the officials.

I tell him, 'You're banging me, I'm banging you. Don't cry to the officials. Let's play some Jagr boosts Pittsburgh past Rangers for 3-2 series lead Belov, now coaching in Italy, was inducted in absentia after he was unable to obtain a visa. Enshrined as coaches were Al McGuire, the tough guy from New York who cried when his 1977 Marquette team won the NCAA championship, and Lou Carnesecca, who recendy retired after 24 years on the sidelines at St. John's.

Also enshrined were Jack Ramsay, whose 864 career victories with four NBA teams ranks second in league history, and the late Phil Woolpert, who led San Francisco to NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956. "Basketball has taken me virtually everywhere in the world. A poet once said that I am part of all that I leave. Just think what that means to a kid from Bed-Sty," Hawkins said. "When this nomination was announced, a tennis friend from Italy called to congratulate me.

There is no way to describe the feeling of fulfillment this honor gives me." NHL playoffs Tocchet said. "I didn't know he had that much speed. It's like the defense is in slow motion." That's usually what they say about Lemieux, the NHL's leading scorer during the regular season and the leading scorer in the Stanley Cup playoffs until he was injured by a slash from the Rangers' Adam Graves in Game 2. Bd of Electrical Ejiammers and Appeal 325; Bd. of Adtustment 4B. It has not been pretty or gentle out there. The Knicks apparently have studied the rapsheet of the Pistons, and decided here was a formula for success, if also stitches. But the Bulls can hardly blame the officials for being wiped away on the boards 24-5 in the fourth quarter Sunday.

Or for Michael Jordan's scoring dropoff down the stretch. He gets as many calls as anyone. And they certainly can't be encountering much rougher handling than the Pistons gave them last year. Chicago won that series in four straight. The Bulls have not responded well.

Not for a team as mighty as they are supposed to be. "It is not as easy," Jordan said, "as it was last year." So this series teeters on the psychological edge. The Knicks, who in nine playoff games have yet to be outrebounded or allow 100 points, are compelling underdogs. Two of the players who did in Chicago on Sunday John Starks and Mason are CBA products. Once the embodiment of big bully-ism at Georgetown, Ewing is now the ringleader of a Cinderella story.

And the Bulls are a fascinating study of a defending champion and superior talent having to quell a sudden uprising. They can blame whomever they like, but it is a series they alone will win or lose.
