FIRE 420 Lexington Ave. A car fire was reported Wednesday. COURTS Waterloo couple suing UI Hospitals A Waterloo couple filed suit Tuesday against University Hospitals, Johnson County District Court records said.

The couple, Suzanne E. Munns and Gary L. Berg, both doctors, filed suit on behalf of their 1- year-old son, Steven B. Berg. They say he has brain damage and a chronic lung problem because of complications during his birth May 5, 1988.

The suit said doctors at the hospital were negligent in providing medical care at the delivery. Munns and Berg are seeking judgment against the hospital in an unspecified amount sufficient to compensate them for damages. It includes health care expenses for their son, mental anguish and lost time from work, the suit says. Munns was admitted to University Hospitals at 6 a.m. May 5, 1988, in labor in her full-term pregnancy, records said.

She had previously delivered a son at University Hospitals by Caesarean section, but her doctors recommended she attempt a vaginal delivery. At 7 a.m., doctors began fetal monitoring, which showed signs of significant fetal distress, records said. Hospital employees expressed concerns that the Zones 10 and Tonight, fair with Wind becoming miles an hour. breezy and warmer. 45.

Munns remained in labor about eight hours longer, and delivered Steven vaginally with the use of forceps at about 3:30 p.m. "There was no pediatric staff personnel in attendance of this distressed, high-risk delivery," the suit said. Steven suffered birth asphyxia, and drew meconium fetal excrement in the intestinal tract into his lungs, records said. This was aggravated by mask ventilation being performed by an anesthesiologist. Steven's trachea was not cleared of meconium within a reasonable amount of time after delivery, records said.

Munns and Berg demand a jury trial in the case. BIRTHS BECKER: A son, Tyler Elmer, to Cindy and Donald Becker of Ainsworth. Born Jan. 13 at Mercy Hospital. Grandparents are Mr.
