Professor Bryant, 81, of 903 Highwood distinguished Carver professor emeritus at UI, died Tuesday at his home after a long illness. Donations may be made to the Donald Cross Bryant Scholarship Fund in care of the UI Foundation.

Professor Bryant was born Sept. 17, 1905, in New York City, son of William Ashbrook and Rebecca Louise Cross Bryant. He, married Mary Mildred Osborne June 25, 1932. His degrees were earned at Cornell University; his bachelor's degree in 1927, his master's degree in 1930 and his doctorate in speech and English in 1937. He began his teaching career at Ardsley, N.Y., High School in 1927.

In 1929, he joined the faculty of New York State College for Teachers, where he taught until 1937. From 1937 until 1958 he was on the faculty at Washington University, the last two years as chairman of the Department of English. From 1958 until his retirement in 1973, he was professor of rhetorical studies in the Department of Speech and Dramatic Art atUI. Mr. Bryant was a productive scholar throughout his career.

The first of his books, Edmund Burke and His Literary Friends, was published in 1939. His last book, completed shortly before his death, is Volume IV of the Writings and Speeches of Edmund Burke, soon to be published by the Oxford University Press. Between these works he wrote and edited many books and articles; he also served as editor of The Quarterly Journal of Speech from 1957 to 1959. Among his honors were the presidency of the Speech Communication Association, 1970; the SCA Distinguished Service Award, 1972; the Carver Distinguished Professorship, 1972; the Visiting A. Craig Baird Distinguished Professorship in Communication Studies, 1982; and membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Delta Sigma Rho.

Professor Bryant is survived by one sister, Ruby Elizabeth Boudra of Russelville, two brothers, Ashbrook of Bethesda, and William Cullen of Garrison, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Lucy Page Osborne of Iowa City. His wife died earlier. O'Bryant of 853 Hawkeye Park turned her car left into a private drive and was struck by a car driven by Diana Cox of 2602 E.

Washington St. Cox's car sustained about $1,500 damage and O'Bryant's about $500 damage. 406 S. Gilbert. Steve Silberman reported Wednesday that the rear window of his car had been smashed by a baseball.

John Westermayer of Des Plaines, admitted to breaking the car window while playing catch with Liobel Schlicht of Waukeegan, police said. TRANSIT WATCH County Care Center, died Wednesday at the Washington County Hospital after a short illness. Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with burial at Oregon Cemetery in Ains-worth. The Rev.

John Whalen will officiate. Visitation began today at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Washington County Care Center. Mrs. Gerot was born June 3, 1899, in Lone Tree, daughter of Charles Jr.

and Alice DeWein Eden. She married Roy E. Gerot April 30, 1936, in Riverside. He died Sept. 5, 1984.

She was educated and reared in Lone Tree. She graduated from the University of Iowa School of Nursing and worked at the Washington County Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of St. James' Catholic Church in Washington. She is survived by one son, Robert of Ainsworth; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Two sisters and four brothers died earlier. Eakins MARRIAGES Iowa City Transit Saturday schedule: Seventh Avenue route: Departs from the downtown transit interchange at 15 minutes past each hour instead of the previous 45 minutes after. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Mr. Otto was born April 27, 1917, in Iowa City, son of Judge Ralph and Alma Moffitt Otto. He married Esther Custis Aug. 21, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He attended University High School. He worked for 34 years with the Federal Aviation Administration at the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids airports, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Iowa City Amateur Radio Club, active in Boy Scouts, Quarter Century Wireless, Iowa City REACT, was section communication manager of the American Radio Relay League and was associated with Navy communications in Trinidad during World War II. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Robert M. of Iowa City, William R.

Conway of Arkansas, and Donald J. of Knox-ville; one sister, Catherine Jones of St. Louis; and four grandchildren. One sister died earlier. Kern Thelma P.

Eakins, 72, of Kalona, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a long illness. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Sorden Cemetery near Keswick. The Rev. Ron Kennel will officiate.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Mrs. Eakins was born March 31, 1915, in Keswick, daughter of Samuel E. and Mary L.

Walker Shafranek. She married John V. Denton Nov. 6, 1945, in Sigourney. The couple moved to Kinross, where they operated a grocery store and the post office until John's death in 1967.

In December 1968, she married Willis Eakins and moved to Kalona, where she lived until her death. She graduated from Keswick High School in 1931 and from Thompson Beauty School in Des Moines in 1934. She operated a beauty salon in Keswick until 1945. She is survived by one sister, Anne (Mrs. Charles) A.

Celania of Ottumwa. Her parents, both husbands and three brothers died earlier. Miss Kern was born Jan. 2, 1895, in Richmond, daughter of Joe and Mary Keifer Kern. She worked for Reick's Cafe and for Racine's. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
