Luxury Firm or Extra Firm SI iO The Associated Press HOLLYWOOD The Directors Guild of America held out little hope that an llth-hour meeting today will avert the first strike in the union's 51-year history. The Guild will meet with movie and television producers.

If the threatened strike at NBC, Warner Bros, and Columbia Pictures takes place, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has vowed to lock out all guild members, a move that could spread to CBS and NBC. "The employers in this multiemployer bargaining unit have a solidarity pact under which a strike against one is a strike against all," Carol Akiyama, a producers' spokeswoman, said. Warn responded, "It's really too bad that the employers would punish the people who work in and around the entertainment industry with this threat of a lockout simply because they, in their greed, are attempting to reduce DGA minimum compensation." He said guild members would report to work at studios other than the three targeted for the strike, approved Saturday by the union's national board. Both sides agreed to the last-ditch talks in an informal, four-hour meeting Sunday. The union's contract with producers expired June 30.

"We are not optimistic," guild spokesman Chuck Warn said in a telephone interview. Warn said the union was ready to begin striking at 6 a.m. Tuesday. Full ea. M99 ea.

"I don't care for companies trading off one community against another or one state against another," Illinois State Rep. Richard Maurtino, D-Spring Valley, said.

Maurtino was one of about 200 people who rallied in Sterling against the plant, even though IBP has not decided where to build the plant. Sunday's rally, sponsored by labor groups, focused on charges of unsafe conditions, low wages and high turnover at other IBP plants. IBP announced last year that it would build the processing plant in Manchester, a northeast Iowa town of about 4,900, where it purchased a 310-acre site. But a local citizens' group there filed a lawsuit to stop the plant, claiming it would pollute the Maquoke-ta River and a nearby lake. Japanese man richest The vast Tokyo property and stock holdings of Japanese businessman Yoshiaki Tsutsumi, 53, are worth at least $21 billion, making him "probably the world's richest man," according to Forbes magazine.

Japan is sprouting billionaires, Forbes reports. There were 21 American billionaires (counting families as one unit) on last year's Forbes list of the 400 richest Americans. In Japan, "we had no trouble identifying 22 probable billionaires," Forbes says. Tsutsumi's father founded Seibu Group and bought huge amounts of land before, during and after World War II. Home of Fine Furnishings The Associated Press SIOUX FALLS, S.D. A decision by John Morrell Co. to continue hiring replacement workers for two plants hit by labor strikes could result in violence, union negotiators warned during the weekend. "What a company does is create a war-like atmosphere in a community when they do it," Lewie Anderson, chief negotiator for the United Food and Commercial Workers, said. "They may very well become battlefields," he said of Sioux Falls and Sioux City, where 3,300 Morrell workers are on strike.

Negotiations over a wage dispute at the Sioux City plant fell apart Saturday, with each side blaming the other for the failure. About 800 Sioux City union members have been idle since March 9 in a dispute over a new contract. Another 2,500 union members have been on a sympathy strike in Sioux Falls since May 1. Morrell executives say they have hired 2,025 permanent replacement workers for the two plants, 1,625 of them in Sioux Falls and 400 in Sioux City. 354-4140 Hwy.
