Firstgrader Hevan Anderson knew what that was right away. "It means plants and earth," Hevan said. Mullins showed how things like grass clippings, leaves, eggshells and banana peels can be turned into compost. "Instead of throwing it in the garbage bin and landfill, we can put it on our compost heap," said. The Earth Day celebration also included a presentation by Brad 1 Friedhof of the Johnson County Conservation Board.

Surrounded by a collection of pelts and skulls of mammals found in Iowa, Friedhof read from Dr. Seuss' "Is It Camel or Mammal?" The classes also learned about microscopic creatures and were able to read Earth Day topics in the school library, Busch said.
