Man arrested for Dumpster fire Iowa City Press-Citizen Iowa City police arrested a 20-year-old homeless man Monday on a first-degree arson charge after he allegedly set fire to a Dumpster adjacent to a downtown apartment complex. According to police: Kyle L. Leslein was arrested at 12:45 a.m. in connection with the fire behind 135 E. Jefferson St.

Two witnesses who lived nearby gave officers a description matching Leslein and another person, both of whom officers found about two blocks away in the 100 block of North Gilbert Street. Leslein admitted to starting the fire using a lighter to ignite cardboard and plastic. The other person is a witness and was not charged. Officers also arrested Leslein for possession of marijuana. Firefighters extinguished the blaze with an estimated $500 damage to the trash bin.

Leslein remains in the Johnson County Jail with bond set at $26,000 cash. First-degree arson is a Class felony, punishable by a maximum 25 years in prison, upon conviction. Chief From 3A resign." The West Branch Police Department's other three parttime officers and three reserve officers are not required to live in town. The department has three full-time officers including Meier, who grew up in Eldridge and has worked as a police officer in Blue Grass and Walcott. Meier also was a fireman in Eldridge for 14 years, spending the last six as assistant fire chief.

West Branch resident Nicole Geary, 21, said she does not think the police chief needs to live in town. "I don't think it really makes that much of a difference as long as he's doing his job," Geary said. Meanwhile, resident Keith Noel, 35, echoed the feelings of the City Council. "If you're going to be part of the town, you should live in this town," Noel said. "Especially if you're going to be a public figure and especially in a small town like West Branch.

City High English teacher Daphne Foreman described McKay as "beautiful, feisty, intelligent and quirky." Foreman had McKay in her English honors course and opened each of her classes by giving students the opportunity to tell stories or write about McKay. Students wept in class drawing the attention of passersby, Foreman said. "The kids were crushed today," Foreman said. Foreman said McKay invited her to attend one of her kickboxing classes last November. Since then, Foreman said she and McKay had planned to stage a mock kickboxing fight in class between them "to see how the honors students would react." "I told them about it today, and they laughed," Foreman said.

Scott Hanson had McKay in his English and AP World History classes. "I didn't necessarily talk to her all the time, but now that she's gone, I really miss her," Hanson said. "It didn't really sink in over the weekend, but when I got here on Monday and her desk was empty it was just really terrible." The play, which was a telling of a fairytale, "Hannah and included costumes designed by the children, who told their own "stories" after each music sequence. Grube said that she wanted to make the play representative of the children in it, and by doing so, eliminate the anxiety that comes from tightly structured productions. Grube, dressed in a snowman costume, assisted children temporarily tongue-tied by providing them with their lines or steering some in the right direction onstage. Under draping Christmas lights, different groups of children sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," prowled the ground as various animals, and played violins in front of a room full of proud parents.

Grube said she will miss working with the children, but she will miss being part of the community most of all. "I'm surprised at how this theater brings a community together. People love to be part of something like this. It builds a community, as theater should," she said. Council From 3A Schrieber who took a stance against the 21-only drinking ordinance.

"Why do we try to solve the problem that isn't the crux of the issue?" Schrieber questioned Berg. "Underage drinking isn't the root of the problem." Councilor Dee Vanderhoef said she was ready to take action on the issue. "Talk is cheap, and it's been going on for too long," she said. A list of possible legal actions, including an under 21 restriction, increased enforcement of capacity restrictions and keg restrictions were discussed briefly. The council also rehashed possibilities such as putting more responsibility on bartenders.

Councilor Connie Champion said the Alcohol Advisory Board's bar monitor program will serve as an effective tool for curbing excessive drinking downtown. "I support bar owners. It's just going to take them longer," she said. The $50 million commitment represents "earnest money" for the most pressing issues, said Drew Gilpin Faust, dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, one of the task forces' leaders. Summers said there could be more later. The recommendations range Newsweek From 1A found nothing to substantiate "They continue to look into it," he said.

Earlier in the day, top Bush administration officials came down hard on Newsweek. Rice, traveling back home from Iraq, said: "It's appalling that this story got out there." The store operated as the largest and most successful independent grocery store in Des Moines for 18 years, Tait said. The store was purchased by Hy-Vee in 2000. "At that time, I thought I'd from better advising for students, to earmarking money for development of a more diverse faculty, to requiring graduate students in the sciences to be instructed on gender bias before they are given teaching assignments.

It also suggests allowing more flexibility for faculty who are trying to burnish their resumes for tenure while raising young children. "I guess the question is, 'Is there really going to be some meat to this or is it all windowdressing?" said Mary Waters, the chair of Harvard's sociology department and an outspoken critic of Summers. Summers, however, insisted he was committed to changing Harvard's culture with the help of a range of programs. He called Harvard's hiring record for they say, just as they need to be careful about what they do." In his note to readers, Whitaker said that while other news organizations had aired charges of Quran abuse based on the testimony of detainees, the magazine decided to publish a short item after hearing from an unnamed U.S. official that a government probe had found evidence corroborating the charges.

"I miss the interaction with people in the food industry." In recent years, Tait has been looking at introducing an organic and natural foods store in the Des Moines area, but he failed to find a developer. "The market in Iowa City is ideal for natural and organic foods because of the education level in the city," Tait said. "I've run a couple of stores in my lifetime, and I'm looking forward to opening one in Iowa City." At a conference in January at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Summers said that innate differences in ability between the genders may partly explain why fewer women are in the pipeline for top science jobs. Summers apologized repeatedly for his remarks, and appointed the two task forces one on women at Harvard, one on women in science more generally though many academics, alumni and students defended him. ed "it was never meant to look into charges of Quran desecration." The spokesman also said the Pentagon had looked into other charges by detainees that the Quran had been desecrated and found them to be "not credible." Whitaker added that the magazine's original source later said he could not be sure he read about the alleged Quran incident in the report Newsweek cited, and that it might have been in another document. Whitaker said the magazine was still investigating the charges.
