CITY PRE IOWA CITY, IOWA Snow Predicted for Christmas: Mercury Drops to 14 Below It isn't certain whether the snow will be. light or heavy, but the forecast calls for at least flurries continuing into Tuesday. For the eighth day so far in December, the temperature dropped well below zero today hitting a low of 14 below. This Is a new record for December 24. The previous cold mark was 10 below set on December 24 back in 1905.

By 12:30 p.m. today the mercury had moved back to seven above zero and somewhat warmer temperatures were forecast for this afternoon and tonight. But after the snow ends, a new cold wave is likely to move into this area Tuesday night and continue with clearing weather into Wednesday. The coldest spot in the state of Iowa this morning was Elkader with 21 below zero. This sets new low mark for the season in the state.

The previous low was 19 below set in Iowa City on December 9. Streets and highways in this area were generally clear by noon today, but the threat of new snow was likely to put a damper on many Christmas travel plans. The Union bus depot reported that all buses today were on time but officials were uncertain about this afternoon. The Rock Island eastbound train due here at 4:43 a.m. was scheduled to arrive at 2 p.m.

today. The delay, officials said, was due to the fact that it WAS late going west, and ran into bad weather west of Iowa City. Other trains generally were on time, except for those delayed by a Davenport derailment Sunday. Exactly how much snow will arrive here during the Christmas holiday is uncertain. The weather bureau calls for occasional snow showers late this afternoon, light snow tonight and changing to flurries Tuesday afternoon.

But many areas to the west and north of here were receiving snow at noon, with possibility that Iowa City's share might be heavier than anticipated, Don't count on the weather to add to your Christmas cheer Tuesday. With one-tenth of an inch of new snow on the ground this forenoon, the weather bureau predicts more of the same tonight. FIRE DAMAGES HOUSE IN CITY Blaze Burns Inside Wall at Home of Clayton W.
